Avoid Permanent Damage from Texting Neck

chiropractic
Text neck posture demonstration by Los Angeles chiropractor Dr. Ken Best showing proper smartphone posture to help reduce neck pain

Most people check their phones hundreds of times each day without giving a second thought to their posture. Unfortunately, those few seconds repeated over months and years can place tremendous stress on your neck.

This condition—commonly known as Text Neck or Tech Neck—has become one of the fastest-growing causes of neck pain, headaches, shoulder tension, and early spinal degeneration.

The good news? A few simple changes can dramatically reduce the stress on your cervical spine.

What Is Text Neck?

Text neck refers to the repetitive forward bending of the head while looking down at a smartphone, tablet, or other electronic device.

When your head moves forward, it acts like a longer lever, dramatically increasing the load on your neck muscles, discs, ligaments, and joints.

Instead of your spine supporting the head in its natural balanced position, your muscles must constantly fight gravity.

Over time, this may contribute to:

  • Chronic neck pain
  • Muscle tension
  • Headaches
  • Shoulder pain
  • Upper back discomfort
  • Reduced range of motion
  • Forward head posture
  • Increased stress on cervical discs
  • Accelerated wear and tear of the lower cervical spine

The Hidden Problem: “Penguin Neck”

One posture I commonly see is what I call “Penguin Neck.”

Instead of lifting the phone toward eye level, many people bend their entire head and neck downward for prolonged periods.

This forward posture places excessive stress on the lower cervical spine—the area already responsible for supporting the weight of your head throughout the day.

Over time, this repetitive strain may contribute to degenerative changes in the cervical spine.

How Much Extra Weight Does Your Neck Carry?

The average human head weighs approximately 10–12 pounds in a neutral position.

As your head tilts forward, the effective force on your neck increases dramatically.

Head PositionApproximate Force on the Neck
Neutral10–12 lbs
15° Forward~15 lbs
30° Forward~30 lbs
45° Forward~45 lbs

Imagine carrying a 45-pound weight with your neck muscles every time you look down at your phone.

Now multiply that by several hours every day.

A Simple Technique That Can Help

Fortunately, improving your posture while using your phone doesn’t require expensive equipment.

Try these simple adjustments

1. Hold Your Phone Higher

Instead of bringing your head down to your phone…

Bring your phone up toward your eyes.

2. Keep the Phone About a Foot Away

Holding your phone approximately 12 inches away improves both posture and visual comfort.

3. Tuck Your Elbows Against Your Sides

Keeping your elbows close to your body creates a stable platform, reducing arm fatigue while helping maintain better posture.

4. Move Your Eyes—Not Your Neck

Rather than bending your entire head downward…

Simply lower your eyes.

This small change significantly reduces the load placed on your cervical spine.

Why This Matters Long-Term

Poor posture isn’t simply about discomfort.

Over time, repetitive forward head posture may contribute to:

  • Muscle fatigue
  • Joint irritation
  • Reduced mobility
  • Increased spinal stress
  • Chronic pain patterns
  • Reduced athletic performance
  • Poor breathing mechanics
  • Increased tension headaches

Preventing these problems is much easier than treating them once they become chronic.

The Whole Body Is Connected

Your neck doesn’t function in isolation.

Forward head posture changes the mechanics of your:

  • Shoulders
  • Upper back
  • Rib cage
  • Jaw
  • Breathing
  • Balance
  • Walking mechanics

As a chiropractor trained in Applied Kinesiology, I evaluate how posture affects the body’s entire neuromuscular system rather than simply focusing on where the pain occurs.

Finding the true cause is always more important than treating the symptom.

Small Changes Make a Big Difference

You don’t have to stop using your smartphone.

Simply becoming aware of your posture throughout the day can greatly reduce unnecessary stress on your spine.

Remember:

Lift the phone—not your shoulders.

Lower your eyes—not your head.

Your future neck will thank you.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can text neck become permanent?

Poor posture itself is often reversible, especially when addressed early. However, long-term repetitive stress may contribute to lasting changes in muscles, joints, and spinal discs. Early intervention is important.

How long should I look at my phone before taking a break?

A good guideline is every 20–30 minutes. Stand up, gently stretch, and reset your posture.

Can text neck cause headaches?

Yes. Forward head posture can increase tension in the muscles of the neck and upper shoulders, which may contribute to tension-type headaches in some people.

Is chiropractic care helpful for text neck?

Many people seek chiropractic care to improve joint mobility, posture, muscle balance, and movement patterns associated with text neck. Treatment varies based on the individual evaluation.

Can exercises help?

Absolutely. Strengthening the deep neck flexors, upper back muscles, and core while improving posture awareness can help reduce repetitive strain.
